Huizhou to Build 8 New Sewage Treatment Plants

Thanks to the construction of sewage treatment facilities, the treatment of 27 black and odorous water bodies in Huizhou has made impressive achievements. According to a recent interview to Huizhou Bureau of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Huizhou built 8 new sewage treatment plants (with the length of newly built sewage treatment pipeline exceeding 817 kilometers and the length of water pipelines exceeding 199 kilometers), and upgraded 33 sewage treatment plants (with the length of sewage treatment pipeline reaching 150 kilometers), far exceeding the pre-determined annual targets.

New sewage treatment capacity reaching 330,000 tons per day

The phase two of Jinshan Sewage Treatment Plant, located at the Sandong Town of Huizhen District, was recently put into trial operation. As a key project under the direct supervision by Central Environmental Inspection Team, it is an exemplary project to highlight the integrated sewerage reform in the city. Its daily handling capacity is expected to reach 100,000 tons, with the service scope benefiting over 400,000 local residents.

The phase three of Meihu Sewage Treatment Plant, another key public welfare project at provincial an

d municipal level, has also been put into trial operation recently. With the expected handling capacity to reach 100,000 tons a day, this project will cover a service area covering 188 square kilometers, involving nearly 810,000 residents.

In our visit to these plants, we witnessed the advanced treatment technologies and the treated water, which was clear and odor-free, had reached the class-1A as stipulated in the national Discharge Standards for Pollutants from Urban Sewage Treatment Plants.

These two plants are part of Huizhou’s continuous efforts to step up the construction of sewage treatment facilities last year.

Huizhou built 8 new sewage treatment plants in 2019, with the newly added handling capacity reaching 330,000 tons a day. The city also upgraded 33 existing sewage treatment plants, with the combined handling capacity reaching 845,000 tons a day.

Huizhou to increase the sewage collection rate by 3%

Apart from building new sewage treatment plants, Huizhou also stepped up efforts to build sewage pipeline network. For example, all 8 new plants built last year were immediately put into trial operation.

It is known that Huizhou ended up building 593.9 kilometers of new sewage pipeline, 130 kilometers of water pipeline and 50 kilometers of upgraded pipeline in 2019. Till the end of 2019, the newly built sewage pipeline had reached 817 kilometers, accounting for 136% of the annual target; the newly built water pipeline reached 199 kilometers, accounting for 153% of the annual target; and the length of upgraded water pipeline reached 150 kilometers, accounting for 302% of the annual target.

According to a senior official from Huizhou Bureau of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, “Huizhou will further strengthen coordinated management of sewage facilities, with focus being made on the overall improvement of urban sewage collection efficiency, and more sewage pipelines will be built in urban villages, old districts and urban-rural junction areas”. In addition, Huizhou will carry out a series of campaigns that aim to divert wastewater from clean water, improve the efficiency of all existing facilities and introduce targeted improvement plans for each sewage treatment plants. The goal is to improve the urban sewage collection rate by 3% till the end of 2020.
